Northern Kentucky Skincare Brands Lean Into Local Sourcing

A handful of small skincare brands based in Northern Kentucky are building their business identity around locally sourced ingredients and small-batch production, part of a broader trend among independent beauty brands seeking to differentiate themselves from larger national competitors.
Founders of these small operations say sourcing locally, whether that means regional honey, herbs, or other agricultural ingredients, allows them to tell a more specific story about their products than brands relying on globally sourced ingredients typically can.
Small Batches, Direct Relationships
Most of the brands operate on a small scale, selling primarily through local markets, their own storefronts, and online orders rather than through national retail distribution.
"We can't compete with a big national brand on price or shelf space, but we can tell customers exactly which farm the ingredients came from, and that matters to a certain kind of customer," said one Northern Kentucky skincare brand founder who sources several ingredients from farms within an hour of her production facility.
Local economic development officials say small beauty and personal care brands represent a growing, if still modest, part of the region's small business landscape. Founders interviewed for this story say they view slow, sustainable growth as preferable to rapid expansion, citing concerns about maintaining quality control and their direct relationships with ingredient suppliers if production scaled up too quickly.
