What Kentucky Customers Expect from Modern Beauty and Wellness Businesses
Consumers increasingly expect transparent pricing, cleanliness, respectful communication, and consistent service from local beauty and wellness businesses.
Kentucky consumers are becoming more vocal about what they expect from local beauty and wellness businesses, and industry observers say the shift is less about specific services than about transparency and consistency in how those services are delivered.
Interviews with salon owners, spa operators, and their customers across the state point to a few consistent themes: clear upfront pricing, visible cleanliness practices, and respectful communication about wait times and service changes. Businesses that fall short in any of these areas, owners say, are increasingly likely to hear about it publicly through online reviews rather than privately.
Pricing Transparency Tops the List
Few issues generate more customer frustration than unexpected charges added at checkout, according to both business owners and consumer advocates interviewed for this story.
"The number one complaint we hear about isn't the quality of a haircut or a manicure, it's someone walking in expecting one price and walking out having paid for add-ons they didn't fully understand," said one Louisville salon owner who has restructured her pricing menu to list every service and add-on cost explicitly.
Cleanliness as a Visible Standard, Not Just a Requirement
State licensing requirements already mandate sanitation standards for salons and spas, but consumer advocates say visible cleanliness practices, such as opening sterilized tool packages in front of clients, have become an expectation beyond the regulatory minimum.
Businesses that have adapted to these expectations say the changes have generally paid off in customer loyalty, even when they required upfront investment in new pricing systems or sanitation procedures. Industry groups say they expect consumer expectations around transparency to keep rising as more customers rely on online reviews before choosing a provider.
