Lexington Salons Face New Sanitation Scrutiny

Salon owners across Lexington say they have noticed increased customer attention to sanitation practices in recent years, prompting many to make cleaning procedures more visible to clients rather than assuming trust in unseen processes.

State cosmetology licensing already requires salons to follow specific sanitation protocols for tools and workstations, but owners say client awareness of those requirements has grown, partly driven by social media posts highlighting both good and bad salon practices.

Making the Invisible Visible

Several salons in the city have adjusted their setups specifically to make sanitation practices visible during service, such as opening sealed tool packages at the client's chair rather than beforehand, or displaying sanitation certificates prominently near the front desk.

"Clients can't see whether a tool was properly sanitized before they walked in, but they can see it if you open the sealed package right in front of them," said one Lexington salon owner who changed her shop's procedures after fielding more sanitation-related questions from new clients.

State licensing board officials say they conduct regular inspections and investigate complaints, though they note that most sanitation issues they encounter involve documentation lapses rather than serious health violations. Salon industry groups say the increased scrutiny, while sometimes an adjustment for longtime operators, has generally pushed the industry toward practices that benefit both clients and workers handling sanitation duties daily.
