A Scenic Back-Roads Drive Through the Heart of the Bluegrass

Beyond the roads most visitors take directly between Lexington's attractions, a loop of quieter back roads through the surrounding Bluegrass Region offers a slower, more scenic way to experience the area's rolling pastures, stone fences, and small historic towns.

The route winds through several small communities that formed around the region's agricultural economy, many still centered on courthouse squares that have changed relatively little in appearance over the decades. Local tourism officials say the drive is best done without a rigid schedule, since much of its appeal lies in stopping wherever something catches a visitor's attention.

A Drive Built Around Slowing Down

Unlike a typical highway route between major attractions, the appeal of this loop lies specifically in its lack of a single destination. Stone and wood fences line much of the route, some dating back more than a century, offering a visual throughline connecting the region's agricultural past to its present.

"This isn't a drive where you're trying to get somewhere fast. It's a drive where the getting there is the point," said a regional tourism official who has helped promote the route to visitors staying in Lexington.

Small towns along the route offer modest but genuine stops, including local diners, small museums, and seasonal produce stands during the growing season. Visitors are advised to fill up on gas before setting out, since services can be sparse along some stretches, and to allow a full afternoon or more to enjoy the drive at an unhurried pace.
