A Walkable Riverfront Weekend in Historic Covington
Covington's historic riverfront neighborhoods offer a walkable weekend itinerary just across the river from Cincinnati, built around architecture, food, and public art.
Just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Covington's historic neighborhoods offer a walkable weekend itinerary that visitors say is often overshadowed by its larger neighbor to the north, despite a distinct identity built around preserved nineteenth-century architecture and a growing food and arts scene.
The riverfront district, anchored by a public park with sweeping views of the Cincinnati skyline, connects to several historic residential neighborhoods known for their preserved Victorian and Italianate homes, many of which have been restored over the past two decades as the area has attracted new investment.
A Compact, Walkable Itinerary
Local tourism officials point visitors toward a route that combines the riverfront park with a walk through the MainStrasse Village and Licking Riverside historic districts, both within easy walking distance of each other and lined with restored buildings now home to independent restaurants, coffee shops, and small retailers.
"You can park once and spend an entire day on foot here, which is rare for a city this size," said a local tourism official who helps promote the riverfront district to visitors.
Food options in the area range from long-established German-influenced restaurants reflecting the neighborhood's immigrant history to newer restaurants and coffee shops opened in the last several years. Visitors looking for a quieter alternative to Cincinnati's larger downtown attractions say Covington offers a comparable riverfront experience with noticeably smaller crowds.
