Beyond the Cave Tour: Mammoth Cave's Lesser-Known Trails

Mammoth Cave National Park offers more than its famous underground tours, with above-ground trails through forest and river bottomland that many visitors skip.

Beyond the Cave Tour: Mammoth Cave's Lesser-Known Trails

Most visitors to Mammoth Cave National Park come for exactly what the name promises: a tour through the world's longest known cave system. But park staff say the above-ground trails, winding through forest and along the Green River, remain underused by comparison.

The park maintains more than 80 miles of surface trails ranging from short interpretive loops near the visitor center to longer backcountry routes that see relatively little foot traffic even during the park's busiest cave-tour seasons. Rangers say many visitors simply don't realize the surface trail network exists, since cave tours dominate most trip planning.

A Different Side of the Park

Trails along the Green River offer some of the park's most scenic above-ground views, with several access points allowing for short riverside walks or longer day hikes connecting to the park's backcountry campsites.

"People drive two hours to see the cave and then leave without ever setting foot on a surface trail, which is a shame because the park above ground is worth the visit on its own," said a park ranger who leads occasional above-ground interpretive hikes.

Rangers recommend checking trail conditions before longer hikes, particularly after heavy rain, since some low-lying sections near the river can flood temporarily. Combined with a cave tour, visitors interested in a fuller day at the park can pair a morning underground with an afternoon surface hike, a combination staff say remains relatively rare even among repeat visitors.
