Lexington Council Weighs Transit Funding Expansion

Lexington's Urban County Council is weighing a proposed expansion of local transit funding after ridership on several core bus routes grew faster than expected over the past two years, outpacing the transit authority's current capacity to add service.

The proposal under discussion would increase the transit authority's annual budget allocation, funding additional buses and extended service hours on several of the system's busiest routes. Transit officials say the current schedule has struggled to keep pace with demand, particularly on routes serving university-area neighborhoods and job centers on the city's edges.

Balancing Transit Needs With Other Priorities

Council members broadly support improving transit service but are divided over how to fund the expansion without cutting into other budget priorities, including road maintenance and public safety.

"Nobody on this council is against better bus service. The question is always where the money comes from," said one council member ahead of a scheduled budget work session on the proposal.

Transit advocates who have pushed for expanded funding argue that improved service would reduce traffic congestion and expand job access for residents without reliable personal vehicles. A final vote on the funding proposal is expected later this year, following additional public input sessions the council has scheduled in several neighborhoods along affected routes.
